Part A

Part A of Medicare Part A of Medicare

Part A

This part of Medicare is free if you are your spouse have worked at least 10 years. Medicare Part A covers of hospital stays, skilled nursing facilities, and Hospice. There is some limited coverage for those who cannot leave their home. Medicare Part A usually pays 80% of the bill.

What isn’t covered

Medicare Part A wouldn’t cover doctor’s services in their office or the hospital, Part B covers that. Only what is “medically necessary” will be covered by Part A so no personal services or extras in the hospital. And unfortunately, even though this is California there’s no coverage for plastic surgery.

Premiums

Medicare Part A is the only one that you are not charged a monthly amount for if you or your spouse paid payroll taxes for 10 years. If you didn’t for at least 10 years, your payment will be more. To find out what your situation is call 800-772-1213 or go to www.socialsecurity.gov.

How and when to enroll

You can sign up for Part A when you become eligible for Medicare, usually 3 months before you turn 65. You should be enrolled automatically if you’re getting Social Security. Sometimes this happens and sometimes it doesn’t. Just give us a call and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Your share of the costs

Part A has a deductible and for 2015 it’s $1260 for every time someone needs to stay at the hospital. Medicare covers the 1st 60 days. Then days 61-90 are $315 per day. Days 91-150 are at $630 a day. For a Skilled Nursing facility days 1-20 have no co-pay then it’s $157.50 for days 21 through 100.

There’s 3 ways to pay for these costs:

1. Have only Original Medicare and pay for everything else on your own.

2. Get a California Medicare Supplement Plan. Click Here for an explanation.

3. Choose a California Medicare Advantage Plan. Click Here for an explanation.
